What do you know about Sweden and our Easter celebrations?
Despite its religious origins, Easter is a mostly secular holiday in Sweden.
We celebrate by painting eggs, bringing birch twigs into the house and decorating them with coloured feathers, and eating traditional Easter food like eggs, fowl, fish, and lamb. It is often a time for families to gather, and it’s fairly common to see cute little witches roaming the streets. Yes. Witches. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s traditional for young kids to dress up as witches and go door to door in the neighbourhood, hoping to fill their Easter eggs with sweets. Adults eat candy, too. Stuffing ourselves with gummies, hard candy and liquorice is a tradition that has continued blossoming since the 1930s.🍬🍭🍫
We know you're still confused about the witch-part, right? No Easter bunny, but witches? It seems so strange, but it has a (fairly) simple explanation. On Maundy Thursday, witches flew off on their brooms to consort with the Devil at Mount Blåkulla.
In western Sweden, they would even light bonfires and shout to scare away witches, a tradition that still lives on. Just the bonfires, not the scaring of the witches. Obviously. 😉🔥 Therefore, witches has been a part of Easter for a very long time. Nowadays, however, it's in a slightly more joyful way.

  • ℹ Halland is located on the western coast of Sweden, where you can visit popular places such as Tjolöholm Castle, Tylösand Beach, Varberg Fortress, and of course Gekås - the superstore in Ullared. Halland is famous for its many spas and wellness centers, either located with stunning views of the sea or with the tranquility of the woods. • It's #SwedishWordsWednesday and time for W as in wienerbröd ➡️ meaning a bread from Vienna. It is the same as a Danish pastry or just a Danish, a multilayered, laminated - many thin layers of dough separated by butter - sweet pastry in the viennoiserie tradition. The concept was brought to Denmark by Austrian bakers and has since developed into a Danish specialty. Danish pastries have now become popular around the world. We Swedes adore this masterpiece from our neighbor. Wienerbröd go well with coffee and make a luxury fika.
Which one is your favorite, the one with vanilla cream or the one with raspberry jam? 🤤👌🏻

  • It's #SwedishWordsWednesday and time for V as in vattenkraft ➡ meaning water power or hydropower. It is power derived from the energy of falling water or fast running water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes. Since ancient times, hydropower from many kinds of watermills has been used as a renewable energy source for irrigation and the operation of various mechanical devices, such as gristmills, sawmills, textile mills, dock cranes and ore mills. In the late 19th century, hydropower became a source for generating electricity. Some consider hydropower as a means for economic development without adding carbon to the atmosphere. However, dams can have significant negative social and environmental impacts.
Almost half of the electricity production in Sweden is supplied by hydropower. The rivers producing most power are Luleälv and Indalsälven. The largest Swedish hydropower plants are in Norrland, the northernmost region of the nation. These important rivers are protected by the government from further development.

  • Situated off Sweden's southeastern coast, Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea. The island's capital is Visby. Its old city walls remain almost completely intact, sending visitors back to the era of knights in shining armour. Not surprisingly, it's the perfect backdrop for the island's annual Medieval Week, during which both locals and visitors dress up in medieval attire.

It’s unusual nature, characterized by sea stacks, as well as its long beaches and the medieval town of Visby, help Gotland attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Gotland is a place full of opportunities, a place to explore, a place to relax.

  • It’s #SwedishWordsWednesday and time for U as in ursprungsbefolkning meaning indigenous population. The original inhabitants in Sweden are called Samer or the Sámi people. They are recognized by the United Nations as an indigenous people, giving them the right to preserve and develop their crafts, language, education, reindeer herding, traditions, and identity. Sami country – known as Sápmi – stretches across the northern part of Scandinavia and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. There is no census for the Sami, but the population is estimated at 90,000 people, spread over four countries with 30,000 in Sweden, 50,000 in Norway, 8,000 in Finland and 2,000 in Russia. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages.
The Sámi were originally nomads, living in tents during the summer and more sturdy peat huts during the colder seasons. Today, the Sami live in modern housing and only use tents as very temporary accommodations during reindeer migrations. Most Sami live in the north, but there are Sami all over Sweden. Today, only ten percent of Swedish Sami earn a living from the reindeer industry, and many combine their family businesses with tourism, fishing, crafts, and other trades.

  • In Sweden, we love our sweets and fika, and like we like to celebrate it. Today, March 25, is Waffle Day in Sweden. It used to be all about the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin, but today it's mostly about waffles, waffles and some more waffles. Unike Belgium waffles, Swedish waffles are thinner and usually made into heart shapes and served with jam or fruit and whipped cream. It's believed that it's only through a hearing mistake that it became våffeldagen (waffle day) since March 25 is also called Vårfrudagen in Sweden. Who will be eating Swedish waffles today? 🙋🏻‍♀️

  • Öland is the second largest island of Sweden. It is located in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Småland. Öland is a favourite summer holiday destination for Swedish families, including the Royal Family that stays at Solliden.
Öland’s landscape is full of nuances and offers something for everyone. Shallow sandy beaches or steep stone quarries, alvar plains or luscious green forest, modern art or classic handicrafts, an Iron Age village or Viking graves, golf courses or archery.
Southern Öland was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2000 because Öland differs from other places on earth. This is partly due to its limestone bedrock, mild climate and geographic location, which have resulted in unique conditions for life on the island.
