  • Öland is the second largest island of Sweden. It is located in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Småland. Öland is a favourite summer holiday destination for Swedish families, including the Royal Family that stays at Solliden.
Öland’s landscape is full of nuances and offers something for everyone. Shallow sandy beaches or steep stone quarries, alvar plains or luscious green forest, modern art or classic handicrafts, an Iron Age village or Viking graves, golf courses or archery.
Southern Öland was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2000 because Öland differs from other places on earth. This is partly due to its limestone bedrock, mild climate and geographic location, which have resulted in unique conditions for life on the island.

  • It's #SwedishWordsWednesday and time for T as in träskor ➡ Träskor or clogs are shoes with wooden soles, open-heeled, and with leather tops that slip on. Older models are usually entirely made of wood, painted to mimic leather or are sometimes richly painted with floral motifs. Since the early 1300s, the wooden shoe has been the utilitarian footwear for peasants of northern Europe. They were easy to slip on, durable and kept the wearer’s feet dry. Clogs, with their wooden heels, made a distinctive sound when you walked in them. That is one of the reasons why clog dancing was a traditional dance of many Scandinavian countries and cultures.⠀
The iconic fashion piece of the '70s, the clog was not an invention of the decade, but an import from Scandinavia. The traditional wooden clogs of Holland, Sweden, and Finland got a high-fashion make-over in the '70s and hit the streets of the United States. Everyone wore clogs, most often without socks. Women, men, top fashion models and celebrities all wore them! The clunky shoe paired with bell-bottom jeans created a groovy, unique silhouette synonymous with the 1970s. ⠀
There is a revival of clogs going on today even though they never fully disappeared. New Swedish companies have started making clogs with updated designs and features that appeal to changing tastes. Do you own a pair of clogs?⠀

  • #Fettisdagen är äntligen här! Mer #semlor åt folket!👌😍⠀
This is what many Swedes will be feasting on today: The Semla ('semlor' in plural) - a wheat flour bun, flavoured with cardamom and filled with almond paste and whipped cream. It has become something of a carb-packed icon in Sweden and is historically associated with Shrove Tuesday (or Fat Tuesday) as it was the last celebratory feast before the Christian fasting period of Lent. Today however, no such reservations exist and semlor are enjoyed in the month or so leading up to Easter. Every year there are newspaper panels that judge which semla is the best in town, and bakeries are trying to challenged the traditional semla, hoping to create the next big buzz. What can we say, we are really crazy about our semlor!⠀
📚Text is inspired by and you can read a lot more about semlor and find a recipe on the link in our bio.⠀
📍Your best chance to grab your hands on some semlor in the Boston area today would probably be Crown Bakery in Worcester. Kaffestugan at the Scandinavian Living Center in Newton will be selling semlor every Saturday until Easter ---> Protip: pre-order semlor to by Thursday. #sweaboston⠀

Heja alla som kör Vasaloppet idag! 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Vasaloppet is the world's biggest ski race. The 90 km course starts in the village of Sälen and ends in the town of Mora 🇸🇪.
Visste du att hela 15 800 skidåkare var anmälda till denna 95:e version av loppet. Rekordmånga tjejer 2019: 2 500! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Vasaloppet 2019 has participants from 45 different nations, counting Sweden. About 3,700 of the registered participants come from countries other than Sweden, most from Norway (1,115).
Gustav Eriksson’s adventure in Dalarna took place during the winter of 1520–21. In 1523 he was elected King of Sweden. The first Vasaloppet took place on Sunday, March 19, 1922.
Now the 95th Vasaloppet will take place, which is also the 23rd with a special competition class for women (started in 1997). Three races have been cancelled: 1932, 1934 and 1990. Since 1948 the race has always run on the first Sunday of March, except in 2015 when the race ran on the second Sunday because of the World Ski Championships in Falun.
The first live TV broadcast of Vasaloppet took place in 1966. This will be the 42nd time that Vasaloppet (in part or in its entirety) is transmitted live, and it’s the 37th time that the Vasaloppet start is broadcast live on television. .
  • Småland is one of Sweden’s larger provinces and is situated in the southern part. Småland literally means Small Lands, due to it used to be an aggrupation of dozens little territories. Rural conditions were especially bleak in the stony and unforgiving Småland, which became the heartland of emigration in the end of 1800. A region famous for its beautiful countryside, cute red cottages, glass and furniture design, IKEA and traditional food. The people of Småland are known for being inventive entrepreneurs. Astrid Lindgren the author of Pippi Longstocking and other children’s books, is one of many famous people from Småland. Do you know anyone else from Småland? What about Carl von Linné and Stefan Edberg? #sweaboston #swedishprovinces #sweden #swedesintheus #swedishheritage #blekinge #swedishtraditions #visitsweden

  • It's #SwedishWordsWednesday and time for S as in surströmming ➡ meaning sour herring. It is fermented not rotten, even though it smells like it is. Salting is an old food preservation method and has been around for thousands of years around the world. Small Baltic Herring are caught in the spring, salted (using just enough salt to prevent the raw herring from rotting) and left to ferment at leisure before being stuffed in a tin about a month before it hits the tables and shops. The fermentation process continues in the tin; ‘souring’ as the Swedes refer to it, and results in a bulging tin of fermented herring or surströmming. The aroma is pungent, and the taste is rounded yet piquant with a distinct acidity. Tips for your surströmming party; As the tin is pressurized, open the surströmming in a basin of water. This should be done outdoors. Wash it, gut it, and wrap it in buttered tunnbröd, a type of sweetened flat bread, with slices of almond potatoes and diced red onion. Accompany with beer, schnapps and lots of friends. Enjoy! 😉🇸🇪🍻🍴⠀
